Susan Aitken – Leader of Glasgow City Council

Susan Aitken TRNSMT response

Feedback from Susan Aitken following TRNSMT 2018. This response took 8 months. It did not answer all the issues raised by the constituent.

Please accept my sincere apologies for the delay in responding to you. Having raised concerns with officers in Neighbourhoods and Sustainability, they have now provided me with the following information.

I refer to your enquiry forwarded from a resident of the Glasgow Green area.

“Glasgow Green is the City’s premier outdoor event space and one of the few capable of hosting major events such as TRNSMT and the World Pipe Band Championships. These events allow Glasgow to maintain its status as a UNESCO City of Music and bring much need visitors and income to the City. That said, it is fully appreciated that events can have an impact on the residents and regular users of the Park.

2018 was a particularly busy year as, in addition to the annual events held there, the European Championships Go Live event also took place. This meant that, as {Name removed} mentions, the Park was occupied for nearly 3 months. This was an unusual situation as, most years, there are rest periods where no events take place or those that do have minimal impact.

I can advise that there will be no ‘Go Live’ type event in 2019 and the TRNSMT event will take place over a shorter duration. These 2 factors will result in more time on the Green when no activities will be taking place.

As indicated, although many events occupy a large area of the Park, officers work with event organisers to ensure access as much as is possible without risk to health and safety. This is an ongoing matter and, each year, more changes are made to site plans and build schedules to identify improvements to this. It may appear that many areas are blocked off with no activity taking place. I can confirm that officers work with the event organisers to ensure that, when identifying areas that require a fenceline to maintain safe working areas, only the required areas is incorporated.

It is appreciated that {name removed} has taken the time to express his and resident concerns and these will be taken on board during the planning process for any events going forward.”

I trust this information is of assistance.
